Frequently Asked Questions

Sauna Steam and Ice is an Australian, family-owned business built on decades of architectural construction experience and years of dedicated work in sauna craftsmanship. Our owners, a builder and a physiotherapist are both invested in quality, craftmanship and healthy living. That background shapes our approach, guiding us to offer a carefully curated range of products chosen for their quality, reliability, and real-world performance. We're transparent, we care about good information, and we stand behind the products that we sell.

We're launching with our sauna range first as part of a carefully planned rollout. Our goal is to build a collection of premium wellness products across sauna, steam, and ice therapy, and we're expanding step by step to ensure every product we offer meets our quality standards. We are currently testing new steam room and ice bath products as part of our quality control process.

Our steam and ice collections are coming soon, and we're already working on bringing the best options to the store. In the meantime, if you have a specific product or brand in mind, please get in touch-we may be able to source it for you or provide guidance on what's coming next.

Sauna Heater Collection FAQs

There are a number of differences between infrared saunas and traditional saunas. Within traditional saunas there can also be different types. We have listed some of these below:

Traditional saunas can be used without pouring water over the hot stones. This type of sauna is referred to as a dry sauna. When the user pours water over the stones to create steam and humidity, this is referred to as a soft sauna. Traditional saunas create a hot & dry / or a hot and humid environment.

Infrared saunas are dry saunas only and the heat is generated via infrared heat waves being emitted from the infrared panels & lamps, directly into the body. Infrared panels / lamps do also heat the air within the sauna, but to a much lower maximum temp, usually around 55 to 65 degrees.

No-sauna heaters must always be installed by a licensed electrician to comply with Australian standards, provide safety and to maintain your product warranty.

You can use our free sauna heater calculator to help you choose the right size heater. For more information on choosing the right sauna heater please see our heater collection page.

Sauna Timber Collection FAQs

Our timber selection is informed by extensive real-world use within sauna environments. We have personally visited and inspected the timber from various mills in Canada. Through years of hands-on experience, our partner company, Natura Sauna, has tested and refined the use of various timber species and profiles, helping to identify the materials that consistently perform well under sauna conditions. This experience allows us to offer sauna timber that resists warping, splitting, and excessive movement over time. We dont sell anything we wouldn't use ourselves, so you can be assured of the quality and suitability of the timber we sell.

Western Red Cedar is the pinnacle of timber choice for sauna construction. It offers the classic sauna experience, prized for its dimensional stability in heat and humidity, warm aesthetics, and distinctive, soothing aroma. Other suitable timber options for saunas are Modified Timbers like Accoya and thermally treated timbers that are engineered through non-toxic processes to be rot-proof, insect-resistant, and exceptionally stable, making them versatile for both interior linings and external cladding.

Look for profiles designed for "secret nailing". These provide enough coverage to conceal nail holes even as the timber naturally expands and contracts with heat and humidity. We specifically stock profiles, like our standard sauna board, that meet this requirement for a clean and aesthetically pleasing look. You will find our Western Red Cedar Sauna Board on our Premium Sauna Timber page.

Generally not. There is a plywood manufacturer in Europe who does make a range of sauna specific plywood products, but at this stage we are not stocking them. We may do so in the future. For external cladding 'ShadowClad' is a suitable plywood product. There are a variety of sheet products that can be used externally to clad saunas.

There are several options for bench slats, and its not always as simple as choosing the thinnest section. A minimum bench slat thickness should be 17mm. A 20mm bench offers a more robust bench and a 30mm slat is a premium bench slat thickness.

We do not recommend building commercial sauna benches with bench slats below 25 - 30mm in thickness. Benches with wider slats are more economical to build, requiring less labour per square metre of bench. Narrower bench slats look great, but the labour component is higher.
